LeBron James and the Lakers are NBA champions: ‘We just want our respect’

The strangest, longest, most disjointed season in NBA history is now over.

And LeBron James is the king once again.

James — winner of his fourth NBA Finals most valuable player award — led the Los Angeles Lakers to the 17th title in franchise history Sunday night in a rollicking, never-in-doubt 106-93 victory over the Miami Heat.

James was playing in the 10th championship series of his 17-season career and his first with the Lakers, and was dominant as the Lakers just rolled over the physically and emotionally spent Heat.

“I told Jeannie (Buss, the team’s owner) when I came here that I was going to put this franchise back in the position where it belongs,” James said during the trophy presentation. “For me to be a part of such a historical franchise is an unbelievable feeling.

“We just want our respect. Rob (Pelinka, Lakers GM) wants his respect. Coach (Frank) Vogel wants his respect … and I want my damn respect, too.”

James finished with 28 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists for his 11th career NBA Finals triple-double and 28th in the playoffs. He checked out for the last time with about 90 seconds left in the fourth quarter to be well-rested for the post-game celebration.

“One thing I can do is to commit to the game, put myself and my body and my mind to be in a position to be available to my teammates,” James said. “I just hope I make my guys proud.”

Now having played an NBA-record 260 playoff games — the equivalent of about 3 1/2 full regular seasons — the 35-year-old James has won championships with three different teams and has won the Finals MVP award each time he’s lifted the Larry O’Brien Trophy.

He joins Lakers teammate Danny Green (San Antonio, Toronto, Lakers), Robert Horry (San Antonio, Houston, Lakers) and John Salley (Detroit, Chicago, Lakers) as champions with three teams.

The latest championship — in his second season after joining the Lakers for what some thought would be the denouement of his illustrious career — will certainly ignite more conversation about where James ranks among the all-time greats of the sport. In many ways that’s just noise, because comparing players at different positions in different eras and wildly different styles of play is an exercise in futility. There is no denying, however, that James is the best and most dominant player of this era, and shows no signs of slowing down.

The Lakers’ celebration could actually have started at halftime. They rode a clinical 36-16 second quarter to a 28-point lead, the second-largest halftime margin in an NBA Finals game.

The game ends a season that survived a four-month pandemic-induced hiatus and more than three months of bubble life on the Disney grounds just outside Orlando.

It was a monumental undertaking by the league and the 22 teams that played in Florida, one that savaged some economic order for a multibillion-dollar worldwide industry.

And it was a particularly tumultuous season for the Lakers, who lost iconic Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant along with his daughter and seven others in a January helicopter crash. That was an emotional stunner that lingers around the team to this day.

“We have a PhD in adversity, I’ll tell you that,” Vogel said during the on-court trophy presentation.

The Heat just didn’t have the energy needed to stay with the Los Angeles juggernaut. After improbably stretching the series to six games behind the brilliance of Jimmy Butler, they had nothing in the tank — and even an emotional boost from the return of injured Goran Dragic did nothing for them.

Butler, who had posted triple-doubles in two of the previous three games, could not summon the necessary energy and was nowhere near the level he’d been at, finishing with only 12 points on 10 field-goal attempts.

“It’s hard, because it was special to us,” Butler said. “We really enjoyed playing with one another, really enjoyed being around one another, and I just appreciate and I’m thankful that I had the opportunity to do that.

“Obviously nobody likes to lose. I think we fought all year long, up and downs, stayed together. That’s what it’s all about.”

But Butler’s performance throughout the series was inspiring and revelatory.

“Jimmy has a superstar competitive spirit to him, and if you try to evaluate him or put him in a conventional box of how you view a modern-day basketball player you’re totally missing the boat on J.B.,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. “He’s a leader, he’s a winner … just a supreme competitor.”

A switch worked to near perfection for the Lakers, who took Dwight Howard out of the starting lineup in favour of Alex Caruso. The move shifted Anthony Davis to centre and his defensive presence in the paint changed the game dramatically. Miami could not get anywhere near the rim, and the Heat’s outside shooting was not nearly good enough.

Davis finished with 19 points and 15 rebounds, and was part of what Vogel called a “defensive masterpiece.”

Ethiopia says it will not cave to ‘aggression’ in dam dispute

FILE PHOTO: Ethiopia’s Grand Renaissance Dam is seen as it undergoes construction work on the river Nile in Guba Woreda, Benishangul Gumuz Region, Ethiopia September 26, 2019. REUTERS/Tiksa Negeri/File PhotoNAIROBI (Reuters) – Ethiopia said on Saturday that threats of any kind towards resolving a dispute with its neighbours over the filling and operation of a massive hydropower dam were “misguided, unproductive and clear violations of international law”. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s office made no mention of any person or any country in a statement on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), which is at the centre of a dispute over Nile water supplies. But his comment came hours after U.S. President Donald Trump held a phone call with the Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok in which they called for an amicable solution between Ethiopia and Egypt. In the call, held in front of reporters at the White House, Trump said he had also told Egypt the same thing, saying it was a dangerous situation and that Cairo could end up “blowing up that dam.” Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt have been locked in a bitter dispute over the filling and operation of the GERD, which remains unresolved although the reservoir behind the dam began filling in July. “Occasional statements of belligerent threats to have Ethiopia succumb to unfair terms still abound,” Abiy’s office said. “These threats and affronts to Ethiopian sovereignty are misguided, unproductive, and clear violations of international law.” The first phase of filling the dam completed in August, Abiy’s office said. Egypt says it is dependent on the Nile for more than 90% of its scarce fresh water supplies, and fears the dam could have a devastating effect on its economy. Trump said on Friday said he had brokered an agreement to resolve the issue but that Ethiopia had broken the pact, forcing him to cut funds. Abiy’s office said there was significant progress made in resolving the dispute since the African Union took over the negotiations. “Ethiopia will not cave in to aggressions of any kind, nor do we give recognition to a right that is based on colonial treaties,” it said. How the End Sars protests have changed Nigeria forever

GETTY IMAGESThe anti-police brutality protests in Nigeria created a powerful movement that appeared to shake those in power, but after a turbulent fortnight, BBC Hausa editor Aliyu Tanko considers where it goes from here. A potent mix of street protests and social media has given young Nigerians a voice that has shattered the country’s culture of deference. As the #EndSARS hashtag went viral, so did a defiance of the elite in Nigeria. The trashing of the palace of the highly respected oba, or traditional ruler, of Lagos was symbolic of this mood. The youths dragged his throne around, looted his possessions and swam in his pool. What began as a protest against the hated police Special Anti-Robbery Squad (Sars) has become a conduit for the youth to vent their anger with the people who have been in charge of Nigeria for decades, and demand change. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo warned in 2017 that “we are all sitting on a keg of gunpowder” when it comes to the young. His comments were about the continent in general but they apply to Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation with 200 million people, more than 60% of whom are under the age of 24. The majority of those of working age do not have formal employment and there are few opportunities to get a good education. Earlier this year, government statistics showed that 40% of Nigerians lived in poverty. ‘Not usual mischief-making’ But those currently in power at first misunderstood what was going on this time, activist and writer Gimba Kakanda told the BBC. “The #EndSARS protests were initially perceived as another of the youths’ episodic mischief-making that would fizzle out if left unaddressed,” he said. “This mind-set of the political class, almost overly condescending, was the reason for its slow response to this unprecedented movement and left them all on the edge.” The question is where does that movement go now? The success of the protest in forcing concessions from the government – such as a promise to disband Sars, and wider police reform – has given Nigerian youths confidence and they believe that they can make a difference. A few days into the protests, activists were able to establish a helpline that could respond to emergencies. They also provided legal services to those in need and even set up a radio station. These were financed through crowdfunding and were cited as examples of how Nigeria could be better if it were not for the politicians who often seem more interested in what they can personally gain, rather than how they can improve the country. But there has also been an ugly side. While those who backed and came out in support of the #EndSARS movement were peaceful, another segment of the youth saw the protests as an opportunity. Lagos was hit by looting and vandalism on Wednesday and Thursday They vandalised shops, raided warehouses and targeted the businesses of prominent politicians. Although the approach of these two groups is different, they do share one thing in common: a disdain for those in charge. It is unlikely though that they can find common cause. Any move in that direction may affect the spread of the movement across the country because some will find it hard to sit at the same table as people with “questionable character”. ‘Buhari missed the point’ There is nevertheless an awareness on the part of the authorities that poverty and hardship are national security threats, activist Mr Kakanda said. “The government has realised that it can no longer take such outrage for granted as it has done before,” he added. But it continued to make missteps in trying to quell the mood. President Muhammadu Buhari’s address to the nation on Thursday evening “missed the point by a wide margin”, according to blogger and columnist Japheth Omojuwa. Mr Buhari called for an end to the protests and the beginning of a dialogue, but “he will be remembered for threatening Nigerians just because they asked their government to commit to justice”. The protesters now need to monitor the progress in reforming the police, analysts say Nevertheless, Mr Omojuwa believes that the #EndSARS movement can achieve something. It should not focus on long-term ambitions of gaining political power, he argues, but rather should make sure that the authorities stick to their promise of reform and bringing errant policemen to justice. It is these small steps that may eventually bring wider change. This tumultuous fortnight and particularly the shooting of protesters in Lagos on 20 October will be remembered in Nigeria for a long time. Those in power are clearly worried that the country’s huge young population can no longer be ignored, or, failing that, cajoled. It is getting organised as evidenced by the huge donations received by a relatively unknown group – the Feminist Coalition – that rallied support for the protests and shook the foundations of Nigeria. The fact that these young women said they would regroup makes the elite jittery and clearly indicates that the system needs to work for all and not for the privileged few. From this episode, Nigerian politics has changed forever because the youths have realised how powerful they are and what they can achieve when they unite for a common goal. Source: BBC
