Somali student talks of her Stonebridge to Cambridge University experience to inspire Black Muslims into education

Nathalie Raffray Miske Ali went from Stonebridge to Cambridge as told to Step Up Hub webinar. Picture: Nathalie Raffray Miske Ali had an overwhelming awakening when she left her home in Stonebridge to study at Cambridge University, but does not regret a minute. The 21-year-old Somali student, took part in Journey to My Success, a webinar from Step Up Hub Presents in celebration of Black History Month during October. The history and politics graduate and aspiring lawyer aimed to inspire any young Black Muslims in attendance to go into further education with an account of her own experience. One of seven siblings living in a three-bedroom home, Miske got a “mix of grades” at GCSEs. She was “pushed to apply” for Oxbridge by a teacher at Greenford High School where she did her A Levels. “I wasn’t planning on going to university, I was going to do an apprenticeship or just work or take a few years out. I didn’t actually know what to do,” she said. “In the Muslim community anyway they say ‘is university even Halal can we even go’ – it was a whole dilemma and I didn’t really have anyone to look up to. Truth be told, I was winging it.” Following an interview at Cambridge University she was made an offer, worked hard to get the grades and was accepted into all-female Newnham College. “I was one of the only Black Muslims at Cambridge and the whole experience was overwhelming and fulfilling,” she added. “I think a lot of people aren’t prepared mentally before they step into university, they just do it because it’s the natural progression of things, but it’s so shocking and so overwhelming.” She successfully secured loans, grants and bursaries and restarted the Somali society. “There was only a handful of us, we came together we made a society, we tried to maintain a sense of identity. It was amazing.” She would like to see the relationship that young Somali men and women have with education changed. “I have a lot of friends my age who didn’t pursue education, had babies really young and are living unfulfilled lives and that is such a shame. “The reason we see this in our communities is we are not taught the power of education, we are not taught how fundamentally life changing it is. It’s not a quick fix.” Source: Brent & Kilburn Times The post Somali student talks of her Stonebridge to Cambridge University experience to inspire Black Muslims into education appeared first on WardheerNews .

Court orders probe into abduction of acquitted Westgate terror suspect

ANNETTE WAMBULWA A Nairobi court has ordered investigations into the disappearance of Liban Omar who was abducted a day after he was acquitted of Westgate terror attack charges. Chief magistrate Francis Andayi acquitted Omar of terror charges on October 7, saying the prosecution did not prove that he was involved in the Westgate terror attack of September 2013. Andayi on Thursday gave the order for the investigations after Omar’s lawyers told the court he was forcibly taken away by unknown gunmen while in the company of his relatives. The magistrate said it was not the first time such an abduction happened. He said the trend of an accused released by a court being abducted has been rampant and requires serious investigations. Defence lawyer Chacha Mwita raised the issue in court on different occasions regarding other accused persons who have also been abducted. “If at all this issue is true, then it should be taken up by the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights who should investigate the issues surrounding their disappearance,” Andayi said. The court urged investigators to take the matter seriously because the trend is dangerous. Andayi also urged other human rights organisations willing to take up the matter to do so and conduct their probes. Meanwhile, Mohammed Abdi and Hussein Mustafa will be sentenced on Friday next week by the same court. The two were Omar’s co-accused and were found guilty. The case was adjourned to next week after the court heard that the pre-sentencing report and the Westgate victims impact statements were not ready Assistant DPP Edwin Okello said only nine victims in the Westgate attack have recorded statements and that they need more time to get more statements. He asked for one week to be able to get more statements from the victims before the court sentences the convicts. Probation officer Peter Macharia said he has interviewed Abdi and Mustafa and their relatives. Macharia said the needed time to interview more victims in the report so that it can help the magistrate in sentencing. The court ordered the press not to cover any of the victim’s impacts statements that have been produced in court. The order was issued after the prosecution asked the court to bar any coverage of the statements by the victims due to the sensitivity of the matter. Andayi warned the media not to publish any of the impacts statements from any of the victims. Source: The Star

Refusing to wear a mask in Ethiopia could cost you two years in jail

By Dawit Endeshaw FILE PHOTO: Ethiopian migrants wait to be served outside the Ethiopian embassy in Beirut, Lebanon July 16, 2020. REUTERS/Mohamed Azakir ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) – Ethiopia can jail people for up to two years if they deliberately violate restrictions aimed at curbing the spread of COVID-19, the attorney general’s office said, amid concern that citizens are becoming lax after a state of emergency was lifted. The restrictions prohibit shaking hands, not wearing a mask in a public place, seating more than three people at a table or not keeping “two adult steps” – around six feet – apart . “Now it is as if COVID is no longer there, the public is not taking care,” Health Minister Lia Tadesse tweeted on Thursday. “This will cause a possible increase in the spread of the disease and might be a threat to the nation.” Ethiopia, Africa’s second-most populous nation and a regional powerhouse, declared a state of emergency in April to curb the spread of the pandemic. It was lifted in September. The health ministry has recorded 91,118 COVID-19 cases, 1,384 deaths and 44,506 recoveries so far. The disease peaked there toward the end of August, but its difficult to know the true picture because testing has been also scaled back due to limited resources. At least 79 people died of COVID-19 in the past week, the health ministry said, but less than 2% of deaths are formally recorded. The new law permits fines and imprisonment for up to two years for anyone breaks the restrictions, the attorney general’s office said in a statement on its Facebook page on Wednesday. Ethiopia also postponed its regional and parliamentary elections scheduled for August due to the outbreak. They are expected to be held next year. Africa has mostly not seen the huge wave of infections and deaths that have swept across Europe and the Americas. Experts say a much younger population, immediate measures to contain the virus and having a more rural population have all helped keep cases down. But many African leaders are urging vigilance, concerned that any surge in cases could overwhelm rickety public health systems. Source: Reuters
